# What protocols are supported?

> Protocol support of the Binho Supernova, Pulsar and Nova at a glance: I3C, I2C, SPI, UART and more, with controller and target roles.

| Protocol | Binho Supernova | Binho Pulsar | Binho Nova (legacy) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| I3C | Controller and target, incl. HDR-DDR | No | No |
| I2C | Controller and target | Controller and target, two separate buses | Controller |
| SPI | Controller and target | Controller and target | Controller |
| UART | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| GPIO | Yes | Yes | Yes, plus ADC, DAC and PWM |
| RS-485 | No | Yes, through the USB serial port | No |
| CAN-FD | No | Yes, through the USB serial port (SLCAN) | No |
| 1-Wire | No | Yes, in Nova compatibility mode | Yes |
| Atmel Single-Wire | No | No | Yes |

**Supernova and Pulsar notes**

* I2C and SPI target mode need firmware 4.5.0 or later. See [Updating Firmware](/guides/firmware-updates/).
* RS-485 and CAN-FD are modes of the adapter's USB serial (CDC) port, available from firmware 4.4.0. Select the mode with CosmicSDK or PyCosmicSDK (`Device.set_usb_config()`); the adapter resets and the setting persists across power cycles. Then open the serial port in a separate tool: CAN-FD uses the SLCAN protocol.
* What each adapter supports from software: [PyCosmicSDK](https://binhollc.github.io/pycosmicsdk/) and [CosmicSDK](https://binhollc.github.io/CosmicSDK/).
